چکیده

Nasotracheal intubation is commonly performed by anesthesia practitioners. Knowledge of nasopharyngeal anatomy is essential to decrease the incidence of complications. One such complication is traumatic retropharyngeal dissection. Although it is rare, serious sequelae may result. A case of a retropharyngeal dissection without untoward sequelae is described. Recommendations and guidelines are presented to assist the practitioner in the event this complication is encountered.

Epidurual pneumatosis: a benign complication of benign pneumomediastinum.

Subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum are well-known complications of barotrauma. There are no fascial barriers between the posterior mediastinum and the retropharyngeal and epidural spaces; thus, air can diffuse freely to the epidural space and produce an epidural pneumatosis. We report a case of epidural pneumatosis caused by a pneumomediastinum following nasotracheal intubation for an...

Unintended Avulsion of Hypertrophic Adenoids in Posterior Nasopharynx: A Case Report of a Rare Complication Caused by Nasotracheal Intubation

The enlarged adenoid serves as a mechanical obstacle on the nasopharynx to intricate nasotracheal intubation. No matter what video or direct laryngoscopic techniques are applied, nasotracheal tube navigation from the nasal valve area through the nasal cavity to the nasopharynx is always blind; trauma is not uncommon. Here we report a case of unintended avulsed adenoids that plugged the tube tip...
